PEKAN: Umno candidates under investigation in connection with corruption are still eligible to contest posts in the party elections scheduled for March.
According to Umno rules, they are only prohibited from doing so if they are charged with the offences, party deputy president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.
He said the same rule applied to delegates, who would cast their votes in the party polls.
“The party’s rule is that if you are under investigation you can still contest, but you cannot if you have been charged.
“That is where we draw the line,” he told reporters after presenting school bags, uniforms and stationery to 2,000 pupils from schools in the Pekan parliamentary area here on Saturday.
The contributions worth about RM300,000 were made by Amanah Raya Berhad and its chairman Datuk Dusuki Ahmad, who also was present at the event.
Najib was asked to comment on the status of Umno members who qualified to contest for party posts but were under investigation for corruption.
It was reported that an Umno supreme council member had been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The senior politician, who has qualified to contest a supreme council seat in March, was said to have paid several people from RM300 to RM500 to ensure his victory.
A dozen others were also detained for questioning but were later released pending the completion of the investigation.
Three people were recently charged for similar offences under Section 10 (b) of the MACC Act in Malacca, Perak and Kuala Lumpur.
